RPMX 10/21
Sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures greeted the riders who showed up for the last race of the season at Raceway Park. Despite torrential rains leading up to the event, the Mickey Kessler-prepped track was in excellent condition for those who came to say farewell to another successful season.
This year saw Raceway Park host its first Loretta Lynn’s qualifier, as well as the 31st annual Kawasaki Race Of Champions. There’s even more in store for 2008, but first the final race of 2007 had to be run. A full schedule of Youth and Amateur classes were run, but only two Expert classes were on the race schedule: a combined 125cc and 250cc Expert contest, and a Vet Expert contest encompassing all the Over 25, Over 30 and Over 40 racers.
The first Vet Expert moto saw Jonathan Bronne, contesting his first Expert moto, grab the holeshot. Bronne was quickly displaced by Mount Holly Suzuki rider Jason Harper and Bromley Suzuki’s Barry Carsten (92). Freehold Honda-mounted Chris Chomko got around Bronne and set out after the leading Suzuki-mounted duo.
Carsten and Harper fought tooth and nail, swapping the lead several times, while Chomko stayed in striking distance in case either Carsten or Harper should falter. And that’s what happened: Harper washed out his front wheel in a corner, handing the number-two spot to Chomko. By that time, Carsten had checked out, and he went on to take the moto win. Yamaha-mounted Robert Quinn also took advantage of Harper’s error and moved into third place. The moto ended with Carsten out front, Chomko in second and Quinn in third. Harper finished fourth.
Moto two saw Carsten jump out to the early lead, followed closely by Quinn, Chomko, Bronne and Harper. On the first lap, Chomko dropped his bike coming into a corner and dropped all the way to the back of the pack. Carsten started to check out, while Harper settled into second and Quinn held on to third. Carsten checked out for the moto and overall win with his 1-1 finishes. Harper held on to take second in the moto and overall as well on a 4-2 score. Quinn finished third in the moto and overall. Chomko came back through the pack to take a sixth at moto’s end, and his 2-6 tally gave him fourth overall.
Carsten wasn’t done yet. He also battled Sport Honda’s Adam Blessing in both combined Expert motos, finishing just shy of the win in both motos. Blessing won both motos and took the overall, followed by Carsten (2-2) and Ryan Gainey (3-3).
After 32 years of racing at Raceway Park, there’s no sign of the action letting up. Stay tuned for more exciting action in 2008. Check out www.racewaypark.com for more details.

Labor Day Weekend all around the country is typically spent saying goodbye to the summer, but the holiday weekend at Raceway Park means racing – and lots of it! Saturday had a full schedule of Veteran and Vintage racing, and on Sunday it was back to a complete schedule of all of the normal classes.
One of the most dominant riders at Raceway Park this season has been Mount Holly Suzuki-backed Michael Sowa (75). He has consistently been a top runner in the 125cc Novice class, but it’s on the big bikes where he really shines. Sowa and his Suzuki 450 have been all but unstoppable in the 250cc Novice class. Combined with a seventh-place finish at Loretta Lynn’s this summer and a six-race win streak coming into Sunday’s race, Sowa was clearly the man to beat. After four moto wins and two second-place finishes, he went home with the 125cc and 250 Novice class overall victories and second overall in the Open Four-Stroke class. Look for Sowa to make some noise next season in the Amateur class.
With the annual Kawasaki Team Green Race of Champions only two races away, many racers were trying to get the track and their setups dialed in, in hopes of attracting some national attention at this premier event – including Expert-class winners Ronnie Stewart and Adam Blessing. Stewart was the 250cc Expert-class winner with 2-1 moto scores, with Sport Honda/Boyesen-backed Blessing (1-2) in second and Bryan Wallace (5-2) in third. Blessing turned the tables on Stewart in 125cc-class racing by winning both motos on his way to the overall. Dakota Kessler (2-2) was second and Stewart (3-4) was third.
The 31st annual Race of Champions is just a couple of weeks away, so mark your calendars now: October 5-7, 2007. For more details, check out racewaypark.com.

The dog days of summer are upon us and motocross is in full swing at Raceway Park. The hot summer days make for a battle of the elements as well as a battle of man and machine. Gone are the days of loamy, moist track conditions; instead, they are replaced by hard-packed, dusty conditions. The Mickey Kessler-prepared track held up well despite the 90-degree temperatures, and in turn those in attendance were treated to excellent racing in all classes.
The first 125cc “Lites” Expert moto saw Fox/Dragon-backed Honda rider Adam Blessing get the early lead over the rest of the field. Hot on his heels were Ronnie Stewart, Mount Holly KTM rider Ryan Gainey, Suzuki-mounted Henry Rojas, and Goodfellow’s Honda rider Onorino Fascelli. Blessing continued to lead, but Dakota Kessler (437) was on a roll, eventually working his way past Fascelli and Gainey and into third. At moto’s end, it was Blessing with the victory, followed by Rojas and Fascelli, who got back around Gainey and Kessler for third.
In the second moto, Kessler grabbed the holeshot, followed by Stewart and Blessing. Honda-mounted Bryan Wallace was catching up to the lead trio, and he eventually started knocking on Blessing’s door. Stewart got by Kessler and tried to run away, but Kessler got back by and held on to the lead until the end, taking the victory. He was followed across the line by Stewart and Wallace.
Kessler’s 5-1 motos garnered the overall for the day, followed by Blessing (1-5) and Fascelli (3-4).
Blessing got the holeshot in the first 250cc “Motocross” Expert moto, followed by Kessler and Fascelli, with Kessler going by them all on the way up the staircase and into the lead. Just one lap in, Stewart worked his way past Blessing and set off to catch Kessler. Stewart then got by Kessler and set off to take the moto win. He was followed across the line by Rojas, who’d worked his way through a fast pack of Experts to take second. Kessler held on for third.
The second moto saw Stewart grab the early lead, followed by Rojas, Fascelli and Kessler. Stewart began to stretch out his lead, while Rojas and Fascelli began to scrap for position. Gainey was in fourth, watching the race in front of him unfold.
While out front, apparently cruising to his second moto win of the day, Stewart put his leg down wrong in a corner and had to pull off the track in extreme pain after injuring his ankle, and he could not continue. Rojas was handed the moto win, and the overall with his 2-1 motos. Fascelli’s 4-2 score netted him second overall, and Bryan Wallace’s 5-4 score gave him third overall.

For many years, New Jersey motocross hero Mickey Kessler dominated the Expert-class action at Raceway Park. Kessler has since retired from racing, and he’s now the man in charge of track design and maintenance, but his son Dakota is making him proud. After rising through the minibike and Amateur ranks, Dakota is now an Expert, just like his dad. In his first season as an Expert, Kessler has been riding well, but he hasn’t scored an overall victory yet.
Jason Harper
The first 250cc Expert moto saw Dragon/SoBe Honda rider Anthony Roth (14) and Mount Holly Suzuki rider Jason Harper share the holeshot. Going up the Staircase, Roth took the early lead, over Harper. Early in the moto, Harper pulled off with bike problems, leaving the running order Roth, KTM rider Ryan Gainey, and Honda rider Darren Edsall. Working their way through the pack after poor starts were KPS Suzuki rider Dakota Kessler and No Fear-backed Kawasaki rider Dave Ginolfi. Those latter two riders’ battle eventually took them into second and third, with Ginolfi leading the way. Gainey got back around Kessler, pushing him back a place. The moto ended with Roth out front, followed by Ginolfi and Gainey.
In moto two, Ginolfi put his Kawasaki out front, followed by first-moto winner Roth and Gainey. Ginolfi led until about halfway, when he stalled his bike in a corner, dropping back to fourth and handing the lead to Roth, who went on to take the win, with Harper in second and Gainey in third.
Roth (1-1) won overall, followed by Gainey (3-3) and Ginolfi (2-4).
The first 125cc Expert moto blasted off the line, with the day’s holeshot king, Roth, putting his Honda out front. Gainey got by Roth going up the Staircase, but Roth retook the lead in the back section of the track. At the end of lap one, it was Roth out front, with Gainey, Brian Wallace, Kessler and Pete Devlin close behind. Those five riders were so close, you could have thrown a blanket over them.
Roth continued to lead, with Gainey and Kessler close behind, and the trio pulled away from the rest of the pack. When Gainey washed out in a corner, Kessler made the pass into second and set off after Roth, but he ran out of time and had to settle for second. Wallace ended the moto in third.

Anthony Roth
Moto two saw Roth grab yet another holeshot, followed by Gainey, Wallace and Kessler, but not for long, as Kessler was a man on a mission. First he passed Wallace; then he passed Gainey in the front section of the track; and finally he passed Roth in the middle of the track. Kessler held on for the moto win. With his 2-1 moto scores, this was the first overall Expert-class win for Kessler. He was followed by Roth (1-2) in the moto and overall. The consistent Wallace was third in the moto and overall.

Frankie Lettieri Sunday Rainy
Tyler Medaglia
Two words say it all. Loretta Lynn’s. The road to the Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch in August begins many months before. If you want to race against the 42 best riders in your class, you must start in March and April and do well in the local area qualifiers, and from there you go on to the regional qualifier and, finally, the big show.
Joey Peters
On the weekend of April 14 and 15, for the first time in its 32-year history, Old Bridge Township Raceway Park played host to an area qualifier. With the weather forecast differing greatly for the two days, riders were going to have to contend with all that nature could throw at them.
Saturday’s program went off under sunny skies and in cool temperatures, but the racing was anything but chilly. Several riders make the long trip to New Jersey in search of a National Championship. Honda rider Oscar Diaz from Dade City, Florida, showed impressive speed en route to finishing fourth in the MX Lites A class and winning the Motocross A class. Also making a long trip were the Medaglia brothers, Tyler and Jeremy, from Ontario, Canada. Jeremy won both the Motocross and MX Lites B Stock classes on his Yamaha, while Suzuki-mounted Tyler was the winner of the Lites A class and the nonqualifying Open A class.
Sunday’s weather was the complete opposite. Overnight, a powerful nor’easter blew in, bringing torrential rains and winds with gusts up to 50 mph. The storm, which encompassed the entire East Coast, caused widespread flooding and even temporarily closed one of the roads to the track. But motocross runs rain or shine, and although not all classes had enough entrants to run, several classes braved the conditions and ran their moto. Due to the track and weather conditions, a one-moto format was run and practice was canceled. Riders were given a hot lap to check out the track before their moto. The track was shortened due to safety concerns, and racing was started.
One of the best races of the muddy afternoon was the MX Lites C Modified contest. Zak Klaptosky made a last-ditch pass on leader and fellow Kawasaki rider Kyle Thompson to take the victory.
Local Suzuki rider Frank Lettieri (461) was a double-class winner on Sunday, taking the victories in both the Supermini (12-15) and MX Lites Schoolboy (14-16) classes.
Good luck to all of those riders who made the cut and will go on to the regional.

Rich Zupko

For many, above all, family is the most important thing in life. There is the biological family, and then there are those friends who are close enough to be considered family. The motocross community is viewed by many to be that type of family. We are a tight-knit group of people always ready to reach out and help one of our own. At no time is this more evident than when death suddenly takes one of our family.
On March 17, the motocross community lost a great man when Richard Zupko Sr. passed away. Mr. Zupko died suddenly of a heart attack, to the shock of his family and friends. Mr. Zupko was a great supporter of motocross racing in New Jersey and, along with his son Richie, ran Powerline Motocross Park back in the 1990s. He was always there with a smile and a kind word. Mr. Zupko will be greatly missed.
When it came time to pay respect to a lost friend, the line stretched out of the funeral parlor and around the block, with many waiting for several hours to get in and say their final goodbyes.
Zupko’s son Richie Zupko (413) has been a successful racer during his motocross career, but the most emotional win of his life came on Sunday, March 25, in the Over 30 Expert class. The first moto saw Richie fighting a great battle with Kawasaki rider Darren Edsall and Honda pilot Jerry Seip. Richie would eventually settle into the lead and go on to take the victory.

During halftime, in between motos, the Raceway Park family took the opportunity to say goodbye to Mr. Zupko. A lap of honor took place, in which all the riders and staff lined up on the starting gate and rode around the track in single file. Each rider paid a $10 entry fee, with all of the money going to the American Heart Association, in Mr. Zupko’s name. At one point, the line stretched almost all the way around the racetrack. It was a fitting way to say goodbye.
When Richie took the holeshot at the start of the second Over 30 Expert moto, everyone knew it would be his for the taking. Despite attempts by Seip and Edsall to keep him in sight, the moto win and overall victory would be Richie’s. With family and close friends nearby, celebrating his victory, Richie was clearly very emotional after winning that one for his dad.
Godspeed, Rich Zupko Sr.

March in the Northeast is famous for its unpredictable weather, and when there was snow on the ground the Wednesday before the 32nd annual opening day at Raceway Park, many thought the track would be a muddy mess. However, that was not the case, as track designer Mickey Kessler and his staff worked on the track and turned the mud into a challenging, rough track suitable for an opening-day crowd. The more than 300 riders in attendance were not disappointed.
One of the most well-known riders who showed up on opening day was Boost Mobile/Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence. Taking advantage of a break in the Supercross season, Jason came back to his home track to sharpen his outdoors skills.
When the gate dropped for the first 125cc Expert moto, it was Mount Holly KTM-mounted Ryan Gainey grabbing the holeshot, followed closely by Lawrence and KPS Suzuki rider Dakota Kessler, who was making his Expert debut. Lawrence quickly dispatched Gainey and set out to run away from the field. Kessler also got around Gainey and tried to keep Lawrence in sight. Dragon Honda-mounted Adam Blessing was moving through the pack and eventually worked his way all the way up to second place by moto’s end. When the checkered flag fell, it was Lawrence with the win, followed by Blessing in second and Gainey in third.
The second moto again saw Lawrence jump out to an early lead, followed by Gainey, Blessing, Kessler and the rest of the 125cc Expert field. By moto’s end, it was still Lawrence in front, followed by Gainey in second and Blessing in third, both in the moto and overall as well.
In 250cc Expert action, Lawrence took both moto wins, followed by Gainey (3-2) in second and Blessing (2-5) in third.
Lawrence made it six for six by winning both motos in the Collegeboy class as well. On the way to his victory, Lawrence put on a clinic, jumping the spectator section in three leaps and creating a 100-plus-foot double jump that no one in the track’s history had ever done!
A sign that the two-stroke is not yet dead: Trapanis/Freehold Honda-sponsored Joel Dengler took his CR250 to the Over 25 Expert field with 2-1 moto scores, followed by yet another two-stroke, a YZ250 belonging to Hanover Yamaha-sponsored Rich Zupko. At least in New Jersey, the two-stroke still lives!
The next race at Raceway Park will be on March 24, with Peewee and Youth quad racing in the morning and pit-bike racing later that evening, as well as a full schedule of motocross racing on Sunday. For more information, go to www.racewaypark.com.
