On February 10, 2009, a new law regulating lead content in certain products will go into effect. This could adversely affect companies that manufacture or distribute youth model all-terrain vehicles and off-highway motorcycles and parts and accessories for those vehicles . Dealers that sell and service those products would be impacted as well.
The Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA) and the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) have urgently requested the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and federal legislators to take a common sense approach to implementation of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act's lead provisions.
SVIA and MIC have joined several of their member companies in filing petitions with the CPSC for emergency relief from the provisions. They are seeking a temporary final rule to exempt ATV and motorcycle components, parts and accessories in order to avoid major disruptions to enthusiasts, to the member companies' businesses, and to the companies' dealer network of thousands of small, independent businesses, which employ tens of thousands of Americans.
BRC is asking all OHV users to contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission and their elected officials today!
Use the following links to send your comments and to contact your Congressional Representatives.
Included below is a sample letter regarding the potential ban of all youth-oriented OHVs, which starts February 10, 2009.

NJ riders Mike Lafferty and Wally Palmer finish in the top 10. Here is an article from KTM America about the opening round of this years series.
Russell Bobbitt took the first win of the enduro season despite nearly destroying his bike in the process.
Factory KTM rider and reigning National Enduro Champion, Russell Bobbitt, proved just how he won the Championship crown in 2008 after a remarkable first place ride at the first round of the 2009 AMA National Enduro Series.
Bobbitt started the day off strong and continued to increase his lead on the field eventually winning three of the six special tests. He had quite a lead on the pack going into the last test when he hit a stump in the middle of the course and suffered a terrible high-speed crash. “I wrecked my bike pretty good in the crash and was lucky I finished the race,” commented Bobbitt. “I thought for sure my crash would cause me to lose the lead, but luckily I had enough time on the other riders that I was able to secure my first win.”
Bobbitt’s teammate, Mike Lafferty, had a bit of an off-day after struggling to find his rhythm in the first few tests. After the halfway point, Lafferty made a few changes that helped him increase his speed, however, it was too late in the race to finish on the podium and he had to settle for a fifth place finish.
Factory KTM GNCC XC-2 rider, Cory Buttrick, decided to race the first National Enduro before his GNCC season started and it proved to be a worthwhile trip. Buttrick started out well and rode a consistent race, surprising everyone when he finished third overall for the day. His GNCC XC-2 Lites teammate, Kailub Russell, also had a solid race finishing sixth overall.

Press Release Torrance, CA: American Honda is proud to officially announce that 2008 WMA Women’s Motocross Champion Ashley Fiolek has joined the Honda Red Bull Racing factory team. Honda Red Bull Racing
For 36 years Honda has led the way, winning 57 AMA Motocross and Supercross titles and more races than any other manufacturer. In addition, Fiolek’s signing with Honda Red Bull Racing marks an historic milestone for the industry as the 18-year-old champion is the first female athlete in history to be signed with Honda’s factory team.
After a successful amateur-racing career that saw her win 13 amateur national titles and more than 100 races, Fiolek made her full-season professional racing debut in 2008, winning the AMA/WMA Women’s Motocross Championship in her first attempt and garnering unprecedented mainstream and enthusiast media coverage. The inspirational racer will represent the Honda Red Bull Racing team in the 2009 WMA Championship, X-Games 15 competition and other select events.
Honda Red Bull Racing Team Manager Erik Kehoe is pleased to have five talented riders on the factory team. “It is great to have all four riders back this year and I am really looking forward to welcoming Ashley to the team,” said Kehoe. “Ashley’s commitment to racing and her strength have earned her not only the respect of Honda but the entire industry. Her achievements have really helped elevate women’s racing to a wider audience.”
“Being able to race Motocross professionally on a full factory team at Honda is a dream come true for me,” said Fiolek. “I have been excited beyond belief! I can’t thank American Honda enough for providing me this opportunity and I look forward to working with Erik and the whole Honda Red Bull Racing team.”
For more information on Ashley and the Honda Red Bull Racing team, go to www.hondaredriders.com or www.redbull.com. To meet Ashley in person as well as other members of the Honda Red Bull Racing team—Andrew Short, Ivan Tedesco and Davi Millsaps—stop by the Honda Red Bull team transporter at Anaheim 2 on January 17, 2009 and get an official Honda Red Bull Racing sticker as well as autographed rider posters.
About Ashley Fiolek Born profoundly deaf, Ashley began riding and racing motorcycles at age seven and worked her way up the amateur Motocross ranks. In 2004, at the age of 13, she won her first national championship at the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn¹s. Between 2005 and 2007 she went on to win 12 more national championships. She has won more than 100 races in her career so far, including winning six races in the 2008 AMA/WMA Women¹s Motocross Championship to lock up her first professional title. “This is huge news for the sport of women’s motocross here in the U.S.,” said 2008 Champion Ashley Fiolek. “We all know that Miki Keller has worked tirelessly to improve the environment for women in this sport and for the WMA to make another step forward with MX Sports is awesome."
MX Sports announced today that it has acquired the Women’s Motocross Association (WMA) National Championship. As a result, the Women’s Motocross Championship will be fully integrated into the AMA Pro Motocross Championship beginning with the 2009 season.
MX Sports acquired the rights to the WMA from its founder Miki Keller. Based out of Oregon, Keller founded the company in 2004 and dedicated herself to the growth of women’s motocross, building a legitimate women’s championship that draws top racers from around the world as competitors.
Keller will remain an integral part of the women’s program, consulting for MX Sports and working as the Women’s Director on a contractual basis. She will continue to work independently on other projects including with ESPN on Women’s Moto X at the X Games.
“I am thrilled with this latest development for the WMA and women’s professional motocross,” said Keller. “This validates my original belief that women racers are worthy of competing in their own series and young riders deserve to have a top level championship to aspire to.”
MX Sports Vice President Davey Coombs added, “Miki has done an outstanding job developing and nurturing women’s motocross and leading the sport into the spotlight and mainstream acceptance. With the new role of MX Sports as operators of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, we are finally in a position to provide the women racers the treatment they have earned in the series. Additionally, we look forward to working with Miki on the transition and into the 2009 season.”
Plans are already underway to continue improvements to the women’s program. The 2009 schedule will feature eight rounds of women’s racing with both motos on Saturday in the new one-day national format.
“This is huge news for the sport of women’s motocross here in the U.S.,” said 2008 Champion Ashley Fiolek. “We all know that Miki Keller has worked tirelessly to improve the environment for women in this sport and for the WMA to make another step forward with MX Sports is awesome. I look forward to defending my WMA Championship in 2009 and working with Miki and the MX Sports team to further improve the series.”
Operationally, the 2009 Women’s Class technical regulations will be the same as the men’s 250 Class (formerly AMA Motocross Lites) and the women will be required to go through the same tech inspection while also attending the riders meetings at each event.
On the marketing side, the Women’s Class will be included in the MX Sports television package and will be featured in the live webcast at each round where they compete. The women will also be promoted in pre-event media initiatives along with the post-event press conferences.
“This commitment to the women’s pro class by MX Sports is a milestone for women’s motocross and women athletes as a whole,” added Keller. “It creates more career opportunities for the current women riders and offers aspiring women racers a shot at a career in professional motocross. I could not be more proud.”

For what is probably the past couple of decades Suzuki rider and perennial NJ hero Barry Carsten packs up and heads to the sunny skies of Florida. Starting with the Mini Olympics in November Carsten is pretty much a Florida regular. After winning multiple classes at the Mini o's Carsten has continued his successful ways. At round 1 of the series held at Gatorback park in Gainesville Florida Carsten was the overall winner in the 40 plus class and 5th overall in the Open Pro Class. Meanwhile Barry's son Corey was 16th overall in the 65cc 10-11 class. At round 2 held at Waldo Barry was second overall in both the 30 and 35+ classes while Corey bettered his round 1 finish by going 16-14 for 14th overall. Josh Grant Wins Opening Round of the AMA Supercross Series
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (January 5, 2009) – Saturday, January 3, 2009 was a night of firsts for Joe Gibbs Racing, Motocross (operating as the JGRMX Toyota/Yamaha Team). Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. was the setting for the first round of the AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship. In spite of some rain early in the evening, 42,309 fans were on hand to watch the opener and the event was televised live to millions on SPEED.
Josh Grant, contesting the AMA Supercross Series in the premier class for the first time, won the race. Grant’s win gave both he and the JGRMX Toyota/Yamaha Team their first Supercross victories. Grant’s YZ450F propelled the rookie to a great start as he rounded turn one in second behind former Supercross and current Motocross Champion James Stewart and just in front of the reigning Supercross Champion, Chad Reed. A short time later, the veteran Reed passed Grant and Grant settled into a podium position behind the dueling champions as the three of them started to distance themselves from the field.
On lap six of 20, Reed and Stewart collided and went down, allowing Grant to take the lead. By lap 18, Grant had stretched his lead to about 14 seconds over Andrew Short and seemed to have the race well in hand when a near disaster struck. As he began to lap slower riders, Grant was forced to alter some of his lines and ended up snagging a vinyl cover off a course marker that lodged in his rear wheel. As the cover wrapped itself around his brake rotor, Grant was nearly pitched off his bike several times as he defiantly fought to maintain his lead with under two laps to go. With the cover tangled and smoking around his wheel, Grant’s lead was cut in half from the previous lap and the charging Short closed the gap to under seven seconds before Grant crossed the finish line victorious.
When asked to describe the race, Grant commented, “I got a really good start, and just set into a pace behind James and Chad, when those guys got together and went down I just told myself to be consistent. I knew I was in shape and could ride the 20 laps, I just wanted to be smooth.” On the course cover he said, “I didn’t know what was happening, I just knew the bike went from being awesome to trying to lock up, I decided I was going for it no matter what, I just tried not to jump some of the bigger stuff because of the drag. I only learned what was causing the problem when I pulled up on the podium and saw the banner in the wheel.” About his thoughts going into next weekend’s race, “I am keeping the same mindset, putting in the work and staying with my same goals. It’s a long series and I want to be in the top five every weekend. If I can go out with some of those top guys and have some good races that’s what I am looking for.”
“Grant’s win was one of the most emotional I have ever been involved in,” said Jeremy Albrecht, team manager. “I was really happy to see all the hard work the entire team has put in produce a win so early on. Everyone on the team earned this. Josh made a big commitment moving here and changing his entire program. This win validates everything we have been doing.”
“I am relieved to get our first win,” said Coy Gibbs, the team’s founder. “Josh has really stepped up and worked hard back in North Carolina and he deserves it. We are continuing to steadily move our program forward and our strategy is starting to come together. I am proud of Josh, Jeremy, and everyone on the team.”
The last five minutes of the race can be seen on SPEEDTV.com, or below:
The next round of the series will be on Saturday, January 10, at Chase Field in Phoenix, Ariz. Television coverage of the Supercross Class will be at 6:00 p.m. (EST) January 11, on SPEED.

Willy Browning Takes Midwest Arenacross Lites Points-Lead after Victory
AURORA, Ill. – After an extraordinary night of racing on Friday night, the AMA Arenacross Series concluded its opening weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich., with another night of exciting action from Van Andel Arena. Night one winner Keith Johnson, of Albuquerque, N.M., was searching for a two-night sweep, but could only muster a 12th-place finish tonight. In the end, Spinechillers Honda’s Nathan Skaggs, of Bainbridge, Ohio, grabbed his first career AMA Arenacross Series victory.
Foremost Insurance Suzuki’s Jim Neese, of Julian, N.C., earned the holeshot, followed by Skaggs and GPF Babbitt’s Kawasaki’s Shane Sewell, of Westville, Ind. On lap 13, a slight bobble by Neese allowed Skaggs and Tuf Honda’s Jeff Gibson, of Thornville, Ohio, to get by. The two would distance themselves from the rest of the field to finish 1-2.
“This is my first win so it’s definitely great,” said Skaggs. “I didn’t quite get the holeshot, but I could see (Jim) Neese was getting tired so I made my move. After that I just never quit and rode hard all the way to the finish.”
Defending AMA Arenacross champion Chad Johnson recovered from a rough first night of racing to battle his way through to a podium finish in third place.
In the AMA Arenacross Lites class, Rushville, Ohio’s Willy Browning completed a stellar weekend, taking the victory on Saturday night to go along with a third place finish on Friday.
After two races, Gibson holds a three-point lead over Skaggs in the AMA Arenacross class while Browning carried an 11-point advantage over Joshua Lichtle, of Rochester Hills, Mich. in the AMA Arenacross Lites Midwest Region.
The AMA Arenacross Series continues next weekend from 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Md., January 9-11.
Tickets are available online at www.arenacross.com, www.ticketmaster.com, www.tickets.com. For more information on the AMA Arenacross Series log on to www.arenacross.com.

Just in case you're been living under a rock for the past week, here's a reminder that the 2009 Monster Energy AMA Supercross opener in Anaheim will be televised LIVE tonight on SPEED starting at 7:00 p.m. PT/10:00 p.m. ET. Set your DVR or TiVo or VCR or whatever you may have, because this is going to be good!
While the countdown to the 2009 AMA Arenacross Series season prepares to hit the home stretch, the lineups and teams that will attack the 11-race championship are taking shape and setting the tone for a memorable season.
Leading the way is Babbitt's Monster Energy Kawasaki and Tuf Honda. After signing reigning series champion Chad Johnson, Babbitt's locked up the series' top rider to race alongside last season's championship runner-up Kelly Smith. With such a talented pair, they are surely one of the biggest threats for 2009. At Tuf Honda, the team is looking for its third straight championship. After achieving success with Johnson last year, Team Manager Dave Antolak sought out arenacross legend Josh Demuth. Demuth is prepared to return full time and gun for his third career title.
Several other strong teams will put the pressure on the favorites, including consistent front-runners Team Faith Yamaha with Kevin Johnson and Triple Effect Kawasaki, who recently signed veteran Brock Sellards.
Additionally, a series roster full of talented teams and riders are ready for the 11-race campaign. Topping that list is Michael Willard, who showcased his talent at the prequel race in Des Moines, Iowa by winning three out of four races. Signing a deal with Team Green Kawasaki, Willard will be going for it all in his first full arenacross season.
Receiving support from the powerful Babbitt's Monster Energy(r) Kawasaki team is GPF Babbitt's Kawasaki. Run by Ray Woods, GPF (Georgia Practice Facility) uses its relationship with Babbitt's as an opportunity to give young riders a chance to gain experience and valuable track time in the ultra-competitive AMA Arenacross Series. The program aims to serve as a feeder system for not only arenacross, but dirt bike racing as a whole and is one of the most well respected organizations in the sport. This season, the team is led by Shane Sewell, who continues is rise within the racing community. Joining Sewell is Jerry Lorenz, Kyle Brown, and Dave Ginolfi.
AMA Arenacross Series veteran Jim Neese returns for 2009 with his own team, signing Josh Thomas and Mike McDade as his teammates. The North Carolina native will chase the championship aboard his Foremost Insurance Suzuki, hoping to build upon a solid eight place performance last season. In addition to being a impressive racer, Neese is a well-respected trainer, taking several of the sport's young riders under his wing while maintaining his hunger and drive for competition.
Storm Lake Honda/GPS Racing welcomes Kurt McCabe and Ricky Draper to its stable for 2009. Thanks to the extended off-season, Team Manager Matt Draper has worked considerably with his pair of talented riders in preparation for the upcoming season. Both McCabe and Draper have been riding competitively throughout the early part of winter and will be at the peak of their game for race one.
With a trio of young riders in Nathan Skaggs, Zach Ames, and Willy Browning, Spinechillers Racing looks for an exciting season in the AMA Arenacross Series. With three hungry competitors in his stable, Team Manager Dallas Avery's team will undoubtedly be one for watch throughout the three month season. While Skaggs and Ames will attack the circuit aboard Hondas, Browning, who will maintain his strong working relationship with American Suzuki, will campaign the series aboard a Suzuki City of Biloxi, MS machine.
The always competitive Ti-Lube Honda team will introduce two fresh faces to the AMA Arenacross Series circuit in Alex Martin and Gavin Faith. After promising performances from both of these riders at the prequel race from Des Moines, Iowa, the Ti-Lube team will be as competitive as ever.
Defending AMA Arenacross Lites East Series champion Tyler Bright returns in 2009 with his own team. With support from Makson Construction, Bright will look to continue his rise through the rankings.
Corey Green will attack the upcoming season aboard a GNC Reynard Modifications Suzuki while Justin Hopson will ride for Trick Tank Racing.
CHP Motorsports brings the pair of Isaac Faine and Mathew Cottrill to the championship as the Monster Energy Seminole Powersports team fills out the 2009 AMA Arenacross Series lineup with Tyson Hadsell and Tyler Macmillan.
Along with the top-tier teams in the series, these squads will be challenging at the front of the pack each and every week in both the AMA Arenacross and AMA Arenacross Lites classes.
